We're a family of 6 living in the quaint village of Tarland, in rural Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
We moved to Scotland in 2010 and having tried and failed to buy our own house, managed to buy a plot of land with a beautiful view and some significant challenges, which we plan to turn in to a lovely place for us to live.
Wherever we looked at houses for sale, they were either underwhelming or over priced (the oil boom has had it's effect here). We figured that the only way to get something we were really happy to have spent so much on was if it suited our needs, and was in some way "custom made"; so we decided to try and build our own house.
When we started looking for a plot we made the inevitable "requirements list". One thing that was very high on the list was - and we both agreed - that it had to have great views, because we're so spoilt for beautiful vistas in this part of Scotland. As it happens, we lucked out in a big way and found the plot at Broombank, a disused 19th century crofters cottage on a hillside overlooking "Queen's View".
After a 12 month struggle, in June 2015, we finally got planning permission to build a new house, but because it took so long in the meantime we are renovating the crofters cottage, where we plan to live while we build the "new house".
